I watched as Soroya closed her eyes, her breathing turning slow and normal. I was alone. I took down the lantern and blew the flame away. Now all that's left was darkness. But it was better this way. The tent was a dark color, so if the light was out, we would just blend in with the roots of the tree. I looked down at Soroya and moved a fallen hair away from her pale face. We both had a long day. I remember how I felt when I saw that arrow in her shoulder. It felt worst than when that boy cut my leg. I knew we would both get hurt here. But seeing her, the look in her eyes, the blood from her shoulder. It was just… I shut my eyes and covered them with my hands. I didn't want to think about it. She was save. Here. With me. If something or someone wanted to hurt her they would have to go through me. And I wouldn't give up without a fight. But now it was time to get back to earth. I saw the sky lid up with the flag of Panem, the anthem playing with it. I don't know how I could see when it was so dark, but when I unzipped the tent and crawled outside, the flag was crystal clear. Yes, I had to crawl out. The tent was big enough so we could sit in it, not stand up. But I found it very calm to sit there, in the dark, nothing around… at least I hoped, for miles. This was probably one of the only times I ever felt calm, save, during the Hunger Games. I knew I was going to miss this feeling. So I enjoyed every minute of it. The faces of the dead tributes shinned in the night sky. There they were. Those kids that we had killed. I was glad none of them were the 12 year olds from District 8 and 12. The other tributes weren't that young. But they were just kids! I was very relieved they weren't up there. Even though she was a step or two away from me, I still let out a sight of relieve, seeing her face wasn't up there. I don't think I could take it if I saw her face there. It would just be too much for me. The sight of her being injured was like a train crash, but her dead?! That would… it would just be doomsday. I turned my head when I heard her move in her sleep and mumble something. She moved a little before she turned to me and her eyes opened slightly, still half asleep. She smiled tiredly before she lifted up her head and frowned. I wondered what could it have been, but I didn't have much time to think.

"Will!" Soroya yelled, but it was too late. The sight of her faded and it all turned dark as I blacked out.

         *                  *                  *                 *                   *               *                *                   *                 *

I grunted loudly as the pain in the back of my head hit. I felt like a herd of horses was running on my head. I heard someone giggled and I tried to focus my vision to see who it was. It sounded familiar.

"Mom?" I mumbled. Once again someone laughed and I remembered who it was. Soroya. Soroya… The Hunger Games. I remember what happened. Someone hit me! But with what – an ice berg?! Someone helped me sit up and handed me something. I pushed it away lazily, but they kept showing it in my face, so I ate it with an offensive comment. She laughed again, but it wasn't her laugh. It was someone else's.

"S-Soroya?" I said, my voice returning to normal. A warm hand stroked my head and mumbled something, but I was too tired to actually pay attention to the words. After a few seconds my vision returned to normal and I saw it all clearly. It was bright outside. Day time. Soroya was smiling in front of me. She seemed well rested. But what scared me the most where the two people sitting next to her. I immediately tried to move back, but a strong pain pierced my head and I grunted loudly, covering my head with both hands. Soroya put her hands above mine and stroked my hands gently.

"Will, it's okay. They're friends. I mean, yeah, they hit you in the head with a piece of wood, but we can let that go… somehow."

"Hey, it's not my fault! It was self-defense!" A boy answered. Soroya growled and he pulled back slightly. He was around 15-16, maybe. Jet-black hair with eyes brown like chocolate. His messed up fringe kept falling down, the tips going into his eyes, and he kept moving them away, but they just kept falling. He had freckles. I mean a lot of freckles. The little girl next to him was with short chocolate-colored hair, looking like a bowl around her neck. Her eyes were a very nice blue color. They were darker that mine, looking like someone had painted them and them added a few sunflowers to the picture. Around the pupil it looked like a garden of sunflowers, with an ocean of blue orchids. I would have fallen in love with them if I wasn't in love with Soroya. Wait…

"Hi." The little girl said. She looked like the female tribute from District 12. Was it her? And who was he? I didn't really pay much attention to the other tributes. I don't think Soroya did either.

"Yeah, hello." I mumbled back, eyeing the two of them. The boy sighted and gave his hand. I grimaced like I had eaten a lemon, but he just kept looking at me with a dull expression and his hand out at me, waiting for a hand shake. You could wait a long time for that after you hit me with a piece of tree, you freckled dude.

"My name's Damien. And this here is Leslie." He pointed to the little girl next to him, who waved and grinned. We stood there like that for a few seconds before Soroya took my hand and gave it to Damien, who shook it strongly. Wow, he was pretty strong. Didn't look like it, though.

"May I ask… what the hell are they doing here?" I turned to her, pulling my hand away quickly and wiping it in my jacket. Damien rolled his eyes and returned to whatever he was doing. Doesn't matter, my attention was turned to Soroya.

"Well, last night after they hit you with a branch, they tried to take our things, but I took out the spear and they immediately pulled away. They explained how they couldn't get anything from the Cornucopia and that all they were looking for was some food. So, since we have so many from the other bags, I gave them some and Damien cooked a delicious meal! That reminds me, here." She handed me a plate of something. It looked weird. It was all of the food we had, combined together, but in very small portions. I didn't expect it to be good, but it was delicious. While I ate, Soroya told me they wanted to be our allies. After they ran from the Cornucopia, Leslie asked if they could stick around to see if someone left anything after the fights and they could take it later. So they watched as we fought and, surprised as I was on this part, they were on our side. They followed us after taking the things we had left after the fight, like the sword Soroya stuck in the forehead of that girl, or the knife she jammed into those guys, as well as the knives I had jammed into the other tributes. Damien had made something for Soroyas lines around her neck from the fight and it looked better. They said they hit me with a branch so that I wouldn't kill them at sight. I explained how I wouldn't do that, but they didn't know me well enough to know I wouldn't do that.

"That's why we used a branch. Since if we used the sword, we might have given you a nasty wound." Leslie said.

"Yeah, well… I think you did." I rubbed the back of my head and sighted. Leslie giggled and I couldn't help but smile. She was so adorable!

"So, while you were asleep we said we would go out to look for water." Damien said. I noticed he was putting some things in a smaller bag, along with a few of Soroyas knives and the sword.

"Asleep?" Soroya lifted her eyebrows, but Damien cleared his throat and continued.
"Me and your lady here will go out to look for water. We'll be back when we find it. You and Leslie will look around near the campsite for some herbs, peanuts, maybe a little meat, you know things we could eat. And you can come back whenever you feel like it. Just not after nighttime…" He mumbled and looked away with a vacant look in his eyes. I didn't like to hear that he would be spending all day with 'my lady', but there was nothing I could say. And I wanted to get to know Leslie. She seemed like a nice girl. Besides, I think it would be best like this – one person from the other team with the other one. We would have to trust each other to live. Very smart Damien…

"If you were wondering, it was my plan. I can tell you're thinking too much on this." Soroya lifted up her hand and my eyes widened. Her plan?! Oh wow, she trusts them too much…

"How can you tell?" Leslie asked and kept switching her gaze from me to Soroya and back. Soroya opened her mouth, but closed it. After repeating that with a mumble of syllables for a while, she shrugged and patted me on the head gently.

"I don't know. I guess I can kind of tell now." She laughed and her laugh filled the tent. Damien smiled without taking his eyes off his work. I growled quietly and send a few curses up his way in my mind. I didn't like him. He seemed like a perfectly fine guy. And that was the problem. I trusted Soroya, but I wouldn't enjoy it very much if I saw them one day coming home from searching for water, holding hands, giggling. That thought made me want to jump of a cliff. Or slice my own throat open.

After we each prepared our things, Damien and Soroya headed up the hill and I watched as they hid in between the trees. She was gone and now her faith was in Damien's hands. He better take good care of her!

"Come on Will!" Leslie took my hand and dragged me to the other way. At night, the woods seemed scary and creepy. But during the day it was beautiful. The giant trees made a shadow and the cold wind was now blowing like a gentle breeze, cooling us off. Usually the trees create something of a wind line. Or something like that which makes the wind stronger. Or at least I've heard on one of the Hunger Games a few years back. But I guess the trees were so many and so close together that it was impossible for the wind to go through. The only down side was that if we ever needed to run away in this direction, we would have to be very careful not to crash into a tree. But as me and Leslie walked calmly, picking some berries, herbs, flowers, whatever we liked, it seemed incredible peaceful. I felt free to take my own decisions. Like no one was controlling my live. I didn't have to listen to my father, get up and go fishing. Do the same thing every day. I felt like I controlled my live for the first time. I felt free, calm. And when Leslie would drag me to a branch or to a flower on the ground, I felt like she was my daughter. I liked that feeling. I know it seems weird, I'm only seventeen. But I wondered is this was it feels like to be a dad. Of course, she didn't look a lot like me. At all, for that. But I liked this little girl. And I didn't like thinking that someone might hurt her. Of course, the feeling was ten times stronger with Soroya, but Leslie was a close second to the people-I-don't-want-to-loose list.

The sun was going down and we had already found some food. Leslie had spend half of her time in the Training center learning what was eatable or not, what was poisonous, what could heal. As we headed back to the camp, Leslie lifted her eyebrows at me with a mischievous smile.

"What?" I frowned. She shrugged carelessly, looking away, but the same look was back on her face and I couldn't help but ask why was she doing that.

"You like Soroya, don't you?" Leslie poked me. I feel like she was aiming for my stomach, but she was a tiny girl, and she was 12 years old, so she ended up poking my leg instead. But I still blushed from her question.

"Well…um…" Yeah, nice one Will. You've been on this planet for around 17 years and you still start blabbing like an idiot whenever someone asks you about a girl. Leslie laughed.

"Don't worry, I won't tell! Even though it's incredible obvious, you have to be blind not to see it. But even then it's obvious!" She laughed again. I grumbled, turning my head away with a huge blush again. I didn't get how a little kid would know I like her, but Soroya, who was exactly my age, didn't see it. I really hoped it wasn't that obvious…

"But I guess she doesn't see it. Just like you don't see that she likes you." As soon as Leslie said that, I stood in one place, my eyes wide open and if possible, ears up like an elf.

"Um… what now?" I lifted up my eyebrows and looked at Leslie like she had just told me the most impossible thing ever. Well, same thing actually. Soroya having a crush on me was, to me, like someone eating their own hand. Not that gross, of course, but still something I wouldn't expect to hear. Ever.

"She likes you, she really does! Anyone can see it. You two would make a cute couple if you didn't have to kill each other, of course." Leslie mumbled casually. Am I the only one, who was freaked out when the picked my name?! Soroya was fine with it, the careers were fine with it, and now Leslie! What the…

"No, she couldn't …. No." I continued to mumble the whole way back. Damien and Soroya weren't here when we arrived at the campsite, so we just set down our things and waited for them to come. The only water bottle that was filled with water was now dry and I couldn't help but feel needles down my throat every time I opened my mouth. We ate a berry or two, but it didn't quench the thirst, just made it a little better. A little bit. Damien and Soroya arrived after an hour after me and Leslie with the water bottle filled. They told us how they had been searching all day and right before they started to head back, they saw a little stream and drank from there. They had purified all of the water bottles and we were now free to drink. They said tomorrow they were going to go to the lake, either where the water goes or is coming from, to see what they find. I wanted to argue, to disagree, but they had their mind set on it. Curiosity killed the cat, didn't anybody tell them?! But nothing changed their mind…

"We found some things too!" Leslie said as she lifted up all of the small things. It seemed nothing compared to theirs, since they did find us water, but when Damien laughed and messed up her short hair, I was sensing they weren't done with the list of 'groceries'.

"Nice work, Leslie!" He grinned. I had just noticed how Leslie acted – she may be 12 years old, but I felt like she just kept switching ages. She was either acting like a 6 year old, or like an old women, who knew everything about love. I knew girls were confusing, but I didn't know little girls were that confusing.

"We also got some things…" Soroya smiled as she searched into her bag. Finally she took out two dead squirrels and a duck. They all had markings from where Damien had shot with the arrows and bow he took earlier. I guessed it was him, since the only thing Soroya was good at shooting with was a spear and I don't think she would waste it on a bunch of small animals. Each of the animals was already properly cleaned. The duck had to feathers and the squirrels had their fur removed. So we just had to light up a fire to cook them.

"But if we start a fire, won't we just attract any unwanted visitors?" Leslie asked, saying the word 'visitors' slowly while looking around.

"I don't think so. If we are able to cook the meat before it gets too dark they might not see us. Besides, we can start the fire on the inside of our little home. The tree is big enough to hide it." Damien said while he unzipped the other side of the tent and crawled out. He was right. There was a little space between our tent and the trunk of the tree. It was little for the tree, for us it was pretty wide. It could fid the four of us. Bless Soroya for being so stubborn and insisting we keep on searching for a tree like that. Also a good thing we found one. But I guess the game-makers wanted to make it easier for us. Just a little bit.

After we took a few dried up leaves and sticks, we put together and lid up a fire. I was glad there were matches in one of the bags. It would have been hard to start a fire, especially when you need the fire right away. And that's when the matches did a fine job. Damien said we were all going to cook, but it looked like he was doing all of the work while we were just passing him the things he needed. The hardest part was finding something to cook in. Eventually we just jammed the three pieces of meat into the spear and spin them around above the fire. When one was done, we took it out, Soroya cut it with her knife and see if there was enough for the four of us. It was enough, so we just out the other two lumps of meat into the bag and started to eat. Turns out Damien was a fine cook. I gobbled up my piece in just a few seconds. It wasn't the best, but it was still food. Of course, it was nothing compared to the one they gave us in the Capitol, but I still liked it. Food was food.

After we ate, we agreed that we would switch during the night like last time, but two people would sleep and the other two would stay on guard. Sadly, me and Damien took the first shift. And I was left alone with him outside, in front of the tent while Leslie and Soroya slept inside. And it left me with the awkward task of talking to Damien and have nothing better to do until we wake the girls up and go to sleep. But in the mean time the two of us coped with boredom.

"So you're seriously in love with Soroya?"  I almost chocked on my own saliva when he asked that. It had been a while after the girls had went to sleep and we just stayed silent. Until he decided to 'break the ice' with that question.

"Why… what… but…I…" I managed to mumble out of my own excitement. Damien laughed quietly to himself and smirked.

"You can see it. It's more obvious than saying the grass is green." He said and patted the ground. It seemed black during the night. This night in particular, but I knew what he meant.

"If it's so obvious, then why can't she see it…" I said to myself. I didn't expect him to hear it, but he just smiled and padded me on the shoulder.

"You know what they say – when two people like each other the only ones, who can't see it is themselves."

"What, what, wha?" I blinked at him, confused from what he said. Two for two. First Leslie said she likes me and now Damien. Did she really like me? It may seem impossible, but if two people say it's true, then who am I to argue with them?

"Don't worry. I won't tell neither of you than the other one likes… Wait, I got confused." Damien laughed at himself and started over.

"I won't tell her that you know that she likes you. Just like I won't tell you like her. So you'll just have to keep quiet and not tell that I told you that she likes you… I think I got it right." He grinned and made a face, showing how proud he was of himself for finishing a sentence.

"No." I said out of the blue. He turned to me and frowned.
"What do you mean 'no'?"

"I mean…no. You can tell her I like her." I said quietly, turning my head away so he won't see my face as red as a cherry. It may not be noticeable since the only light was the moon light, but I still didn't want to risk it.

"Love. I can tell her you love her." He corrected me with his finger up. I felt like he was a math teacher, correcting me over a wrong calculation. Alright, I loved her! Big deal. It's not like I could do anything about it…

"Fine." I mumbled back and sighted, leaning my head against the tent and looking up at the sky. It was so peaceful. The stars were shinning, the moon rose above the trees and hide behind the dark clouds. It was quite beautiful, until the flag of Panem shinned and played the anthem.  Strangely enough, no one had died today. Maybe they had joined up with someone like me and Soroya. Maybe they had found a place to sleep, safe and sound, away from everything. I don't know. But I was afraid that today's saved might be tomorrows dead.
Second day in the arena and a group is forming ;) I know it seems funny with Leslie and Damien to keep bugging Will that he likes Soroya, but I just couldn't resist ^^ :D
